Annette Smith, National Representative New Zealand 2012-2014
Annette has been a Soroptimist and member of SI Waimea since 1993. Annette has contributed to Soroptimist life at all levels of governance including being a National Representative of New Zealand, SI Waimea awarded Annette with a life membership of the club for her contribution to Soroptimism.
My time as incoming National Representative coincided with the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquakes. Having been involved with the preparation and organisation of SISWP conference to be held in Christchurch prior to the quakes, suddenly we had to change locations. A lot of work by many people and the desire of then Federation President Yvonne Simpson to hold this on the West Coast where she lived, culminated in the very successful event held in Greymouth. It was a real highlight, starting conference on the train and three stunning sunny days. The West Coast has a reputation when it comes to the weather. I received positive comments about the “conference with a difference” at many events years later.
In the two years as NR I tried to meet as many NZ members as possible. With the help from my local team and the members of the two local clubs we ran a very successful New Zealand Conference of Clubs in Taupo. It was hard to concentrate looking out onto the beautiful Lake Taupo
My final event was the SISWP Conference in Kuching where I handed over to my successor. Kuching was very different to Greymouth but equally enjoyable. However, I think I set the record for the fastest National Meeting. Normally 1 hour but we were allocated half an hour one morning. Even then we got hurried onto the bus after 25 minutes.
That was the end of an amazing two years in my now 27 year Soroptimist journey.
